What is a carry-on item?
A carry-on item is a personal item that a passenger can bring with them on board an airplane. It is not checked in and must be small enough to fit in the overhead compartments or under the seat in front of them. Carry-ons usually contain personal items such as documents, electronics, medications, and other valuables.
Size and weight restrictions
Airlines have strict rules regarding the size and weight of carry-on items. The standard size limit is usually 22 x 14 x 9 inches, including the wheels and handles. The weight limit is usually 40 pounds or less. It is important to check with the airline in advance as some airlines may have different size and weight restrictions. Oversized or overweight items may need to be checked in and may incur additional fees.
Liquids, gels, and aerosols
Passengers are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, gels, and aerosols in their carry-ons. Each item must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less. This includes items such as toothpaste, shampoo, lotions, and perfumes. These items must be placed in a clear, plastic, zip-top bag and presented separately for inspection at the security checkpoint. Exemptions may be made for liquids needed for medical reasons, such as baby formula and medications.
Food and drinks
Passengers are allowed to bring food and drinks on board, but there are some restrictions. Non-alcoholic beverages in amounts of 3.4 ounces or less are allowed. Only small snacks are allowed, such as granola bars, fruit, and sandwiches. Food items should be packaged or wrapped to prevent spilling or leaking.
Electronics and batteries
Passengers are allowed to bring electronics on board, but they must be turned off during take-off and landing. Batteries must be stored in their original packaging or in a protective case to prevent short-circuiting. Spare batteries must be carried in carry-on luggage.
Sporting equipment
Sporting equipment such as golf clubs, skis, and surfboards may be carried on board, but they must meet airline size and weight restrictions. Some airlines may charge additional fees for transporting these items.
Medicines and medical devices
Passengers are allowed to bring medicines and medical devices on board, but they must be presented separately for inspection at the security checkpoint. This includes items such as insulin, inhalers, and EpiPens.
Sharp objects and tools
Sharp objects such as scissors, knives, and razors are not allowed in carry-on luggage. However, small scissors with blades less than 4 inches and nail clippers are allowed.
Firearms and explosives
Firearms and explosives are not allowed in carry-on luggage. However, they may be transported in checked luggage if they meet certain requirements and are declared to the airline in advance.
Prohibited items
Certain items are prohibited from both carry-on and checked luggage. This includes items such as flammable liquids and explosives, as well as items that may harm passengers or crew members. It is important to check with the airline in advance to ensure that all items are allowed on board.
